The EYFS Curriculum at Ashill School

The children in Reception follow The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (2012), which is a play based curriculum, focusing on the three prime areas of learning – Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development and Communication and Language Development and the four specific areas of learning – Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding of the World and Expressive Arts and Design.

Children develop their knowledge of phonics through the scheme 'Letters and Sounds' and develop their reading skills using a variety of reading schemes which can be found on the 'Classes' page.

As the Reception pupils are part of the Rec/KS1 class, they share the same termly topic as the KS1 children. The way in which they access this topic is flexible depending on the children's interests and focus e.g. the topic Castles and Dragons might lead on to work about dragons and dinosaurs whereas the KS1 pupils will follow a more rigid structure based around the curriculum subjects.

Observations of the children's learning are recorded using the app 2Build a Profile and shared with parents throughout the year. Parents are also asked to contribute to their child's learning by completing an observations sheet at the end of each term. This helps to build a picture of skills the child may be demonstrating in the home environment e.g. reading numbers on the lounge clock, using an electronic tablet independently etc.
